How to invoice as a contractor

  • Separate labor and materials. Clients want to see what they're paying for — itemise hours, rates and material costs.
  • Take a deposit before buying materials. A deposit up front protects your cash flow when you're fronting supply costs.
  • Note your change-order policy. State that work beyond the quote is billed separately, so extras don't cause disputes.
